A revision to ISO 14001, a standard for environmental management systems, is in its approval stage, with publication expected in October 2015.

Key changes to the standard include an increased emphasis on environmental management within an organisation’s strategic planning processes and an addition of proactive environmental protection measures.

ISO 14001:2015 will also include – subject to final approval – the addition of a communications strategy and greater focus on ‘life cycle thinking’ when considering environmental aspects.

Organisations that are certified to ISO 14001:2004 are granted a three-year transition period to migrate to the new edition of the standard.

ISO standards are reviewed every five years to establish whether a revision is required.

ISO 14001 began its proposal stage in August 2011. The latest draft achieved a 92 per cent approval rate.
