Rising FMs careers day a success

16 July 2012

After the success of the Rising FMs 2011 Careers Day, the second annual Rising FMs Careers Day was held on 12 July at University College London.

Over 100 professionals and possible new entrants into FM gathered for the event, which promotes FM as a career of choice.

Hourly workshops gave attendees an interactive insight into how to create and manage their CPD, Top tips for job hunting, How to identify their key skills and how to stand out when applying for new roles. A “CV Surgery” gave the opportunity to review their CV’s with experts and find the best way to present their achievements.

Samantha Bowman, chair of the Rising FMs SIG (and winner of the BIFM’s volunteer recognition award, SIG committee member of the year) told FM World how there was a distinct military background for a considerable amount of attendees, perhaps due to qualifications or experience in engineering.

Dedicated stands in the main hall provided the opportunity to discuss training and career pathways with BIFM, meet a range of BIFM accredited training providers, gain advice from recruitment specialists and meet employers.

Chris Morris, a committee member for the BIFM Rising FMs SIG, was able to provide us with some valuable insight into the background of their visitors.

75 out of the 193 who registered online to attend the event principally came to meet employers, while 32 chose to visit mainly for the recruitment consultant skills workshops. 32 attended purely for general networking opportunities, an undeniably ubiquitous characteristic of the facilities management industry. It was widely believed that the network-friendly nature of the event was key in making the day a success.

131 registered attendees were BIFM members. This fact, coupled with the statistic that 45 attendees’ primary reason for attending was to find out about training and qualifications in FM suggest that facilities management continues to be a burgeoning popularity as a career choice.

The day closed with an evening of networking to celebrate the success on coincidently the same day Rising FMs were awarded “SIG of the year” and chair, Samantha Bowman awarded “Committee Member of the year”.

Details for the 2013 Careers Day will be published in the New Year.
