Ethical working practices such as funding community projects, local hiring and purchasing and ethical policies regarding carbon, water, travel and waste, are increasingly being seen as differentiators between organisations.


An ethical workplace accreditation run by property charity the Ethical Property Foundation (EPF) has been given this week to York Place Shopping Centre, along with property firms Shaftesbury and Foundation Property & Capital.


Ethical practices assessed by the scheme also include the quality of landlord/tenant engagement. Paying the Living Wage to both staff and contractors’ staff, and allowing rights of representation to both, is a prerequisite.


Both York Place Shopping Centre in Newcastle under Lyme, managed by Hometown Plus, and Shaftesbury plc, are the first organisations of their type to have their ethical working practices endorsed in this way. (Shaftesbury is the first FTSE 250 company to be recognised.)


EPF chief executive Antonia Swinson said: “With the property industry increasingly encouraged to champion social responsibility, the Fairplace Award allows good business to evidence best practice to the community outside the front door, the people in the workplace as well as the environment.”
