The Scottish Exhibition Centre building in Glasgow could be turned into a field hospital within a fortnight to battle coronavirus, according to the Scottish First Minister.
Nicola Sturgeon said: “We have now taken the decision to start work on turning the Scottish Exhibition Centre in Glasgow into a temporary NHS hospital.”
She said yesterday that it could be operational within a fortnight and have 300 beds but with a capacity for 1,000 patients.
Sturgeon added: “It is important to be clear that we might not need to use the exhibition centre. There are currently 13,000 beds in NHS hospitals across Scotland. And NHS boards are making sure at least 3,000 beds are available for Covid-19 patients within our existing hospital network.”
The news comes as conference centres in London, Manchester and Birmingham are being refitted to be field hospitals for the inevitable influx of coronavirus patients to come over the coming weeks.
