Louise Kiely, director at Harmony TFM Limited, explains how more FMs should strive to become a BIFM fellow.
The pioneers of the facilities industry changed the landscape forever. The depth and breadth of their knowledge comes from years of leading from the front.
They've developed methodologies and led the way in diverse areas, including complex organisational analysis, driving efficiency savings through recognition of synergies, providing training and mentoring and, most importantly, putting the customer at the heart of everything we do.
They raised FM from an afterthought to a recognised and respected management discipline in its own right. The sum of their knowledge is priceless and we must ensure that it is preserved.

This knowledge needs to be imparted through observation, mentoring and working with these giants of the industry.
As a recent BIFM fellow, I have been fortunate to work alongside and be mentored by several leading lights of the industry and they have graciously given their time, support and encouragement to enable me to learn from their extensive experience.
They are motivated to encourage others to become fellows to carry on the development of the field.
We are entering a period of change as the pioneers retire and hand over the baton to those following them. It is critical that we fellows of BIFM strive to attract more colleagues into fellowship and to enable them to play their part in maintaining and espousing the expertise built up by those pioneers.

The Fellows' SIG is planning events to enable the creation of relationships that will be invaluable in promulgating this body of learning, and of course offer friendship and professional support.
