Highways England Area 12 – Amey

Amey has been awarded the £180 million Area 12 Maintenance and Response (M&R) contract by Highways England.

The eight-year contract, worth £22.5 million a year, starts in June 2021 and will see Amey working across Yorkshire and Humberside, providing all routine and cyclical maintenance on the trunk roads and motorway network.

The network spans 1,650 kilometres of motorway, 476km of trunk road (dual), 179km of trunk road (single carriageway) and 1,963 structures.

Amey’s teams will be responsible for incident management, defect rectification and responding to severe weather, and will also oversee traffic management during incidents and the operation of the 10 maintenance depots in the region.

Richard Marshall, Highways England regional director for Yorkshire and the North East, said: “Our roads are among the safest in the world and partnerships like this will help maintain high standards. By strengthening our ties with the supply chain who carry out maintenance and respond to incidents we can work more effectively, identify innovative ways of working and provide drivers with the best possible quality of service.

“We’re delighted to welcome Amey to our Yorkshire asset delivery community. We already have a good relationship with them, thanks to our partnership work in other regions, and this latest collaboration can only enhance our regional expertise.”

Peter Anderson, managing director of transport infrastructure at Amey, said: “Over the coming months, my team and I are looking forward to continuing to work collaboratively with Highways England, building on experience from our successful Area 7 and Area 10 M&R contracts and our North East Regional Technology Maintenance contract,  to deliver the services effectively and efficiently with the highest levels of safety and ensuring customer-focused outcomes on Area 12.”

Amey has undertaken to ensure that 85 per cent of any new recruits to the contract will be from Yorkshire and Humberside, as well as guaranteeing that 5 per cent of its workforce are apprentices or graduates.

This contract builds on Amey’s work with Highways England that also includes Amey Consulting’s design contracts and A66, as well as larger design and build contracts with partner Sir Robert McAlpine and more recently securing a five-year FM contract to provide facilities and asset management across Highways England extensive and growing operational estate.
