Technical engineering solutions provider SPIE UK has been awarded a contract by Calor Gas for long-term maintenance of its Port Clarence facility on Teesside.
Safe operation of the site on the North Bank of the River Tees in Middlesbrough is crucial to Calor Gas; it is one of the LPG gas provider’s main filling plants in its nationwide operation.
SPIE UK has been appointed to design and build upgrades to filling hall safety systems and complete the electrical and instrumentation cabling design and installation for the LPG recovery ventilation control panel and associated instruments inside the LPG recovery annex hall. The company’s operatives will manage safety on-site by monitoring all aspects of the cylinder-filling process to guarantee that there is no hazardous gas build-up.
The design of the system has safety built in, with electrical interlocks enabled to ensure that the liquid recovery operation cannot take place unless the correct airflow is being delivered by the ventilation system.
All equipment installed in the hazardous area is ATEX-certified (derived from EU directive 99/92/EC – also known as 'ATEX 137' or the 'ATEX Workplace Directive' – on minimum requirements for health and safety protection of workers at risk from explosive atmospheres) in accordance with BSI BS EN 60079 Explosive Atmosphere regulations and will be inspected by SPIE UK’s team, which is trained to CompEx standards – the global certification scheme for electrical and mechanical craftspeople and designers working in potentially explosive atmospheres, recognised by the United Kingdom Accreditation Service.
Steven Farmer, divisional managing director at SPIE UK, said: “Calor Gas is one of the UK’s best-known brands, providing vital fuel for heating… and the Port Clarence site has been a central part of its rich history. SPIE UK being given this contract is a testament to the excellence of our specialist engineers and our consistent focus on the highest safety standards.”
A Calor Gas representative said: “Safety is the number one priority for Calor and, given SPIE UK’s expertise, they were the natural choice for Calor Gas when looking for a partner to help us upgrade the systems.”
