Mitie has secured a new one-year contract worth £365 million to run 175 regional and local coronavirus test centres and 105 mobile testing units across Great Britain.
Following a competitive retender, the provider will carry on with cleaning, clinical waste management and security services for 138 test centres – plus traffic management and lane support at 58 mobile sites – across England, Scotland and Wales.
The contract contains the option to extend for up to six more months and forms part of Mitie’s continuing efforts to support the UK’s fight against the pandemic.
During the past year Mitie has been building on its experience so the contract has been expanded for delivery of these services to about 50 more regional and local test centres. More than 11,000 employees based across the UK will work in the test centres, supporting local communities by identifying and controlling coronavirus infections, and helping to prevent the spread of the virus.
Mitie said frontline employees, such as cleaning operatives, security officers and engineers have helped to keep the UK running by delivering services at hundreds of critical sites, including supermarkets, hospitals, nuclear facilities, and transport hubs.
Simon Venn, chief government and strategy Officer at Mitie, said: “For over a year we’ve been managing test centres across the UK, supporting the fight against coronavirus. As lockdown restrictions continue to ease and we enter a new phase of the pandemic, we stand ready to support local communities to respond to potential outbreaks and help prevent the spread of coronavirus. We look forward to using our experience delivering services for test centres to help keep the UK running.”
