Mitie has taken a new seven-and-a-half-year contract to supply services to Lister Hospital and Hertford County Hospital – two of East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust’s hospitals.
The deal is worth £4 million a year for seven-and-a-half years and includes the option to renew it for at least another two years.
Mitie employees will deliver cleaning services at the two hospitals, plus portering services at Hertford County Hospital. This new contract adds to Mitie’s winning streak, having announced earlier this year that it secured facilities management and catering contracts with three other NHS Trusts in England.
Technology is central to the contract – the company will roll out sensors to monitor footfall across the hospitals’ public spaces, including reception areas and entrances in real time. This data will help Mitie to identify the most frequently used spaces to prioritise them for cleaning.
Mitie will also introduce a new autonomous scrubber-drier robot to keep the facilities’ floors clean – allowing cleaning colleagues to focus on critical tasks, such as disinfecting touch-points. As sustainability is a priority, the robot has been designed to use less energy and water than traditional machines, allowing Mitie to help the NHS to achieve its net-zero goal by 2040.
Mitie will also grant the trusts’ site managers access to its real-time reporting platform for a range of information about the work carried out across the hospitals, including insights on areas earmarked for priority cleaning.
More than 200 Mitie employees will carry out cleaning and portering at the hospitals, and Mitie and East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust have committed to raise pay for all Mitie frontline workers to at least the Real Living Wage.
Alice Woodwark, Mitie’s managing director, communities, said: “We look forward to using our healthcare cleaning expertise, alongside our technology and sustainability experience, to help keep hospital staff and patients safe, while contributing to the NHS commitment to reach net-zero.”
Kevin Howell, East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust’s director of estates and facilities, said: “Clean and well-maintained facilities are essential in an acute hospital. We’re looking forward to working with the Mitie team at Lister Hospital, and Hertford County Hospital to ensure safe, clean sites for our patients, staff and visitors.”
