The quality of facilities management has a direct impact on the quality of service provided from that place. Every property or FM professional will recognise the truth in that statement.
When thinking about the importance of excellent FM, we can also go further, and think back only a year or two to the height of the Covid-19 pandemic. This was a time when excellent FM was a critical part of hundreds of life-saving, vital public services remaining available to citizens.
With an estate as complex and far-reaching as the one managed by the UK Government, getting consistent, high-quality, optimised FM services in place is no small task. Our estate is made up of hundreds of thousands of assets, from prisons and courts to schools and museums, hospitals and health surgeries, job centres, military bases, administrative offices, and many more, spread all around the UK and overseas.
That’s why the new Facilities Management Strategy we have published this week is such a landmark moment, and why I am so proud of the work which has gone into creating it. For the first time, we have a cross-government strategy describing what excellent FM should look like.
The vision, values, and goals the strategy commits to have been developed collaboratively. We’ve brought together expertise from thousands of experts across Government and the FM and property industries. The new strategy is unequivocal that putting customers first, and improving the condition and quality of the property we deliver services from, are the most important areas of focus.
Everything we have learnt through this engagement and consultation has reinforced the drive to work in partnership to improve service delivery, embed sustainability and support the levelling up agenda.
The new Facilities Management Strategy is also a hugely important tool in helping to achieve the commitments we set out earlier this year in the Government Property Strategy. That strategy is built around three core missions:
- Transforming places and services;
- Creating a smaller, better, and greener estate; and
- Delivering with professional excellence and insight.
FM, and the thousands of talented FM professionals working in all areas of Government, play a vital role in ensuring the success of all three missions. This strategy is about giving them the framework they need to get there.
I will finish where I started, and re-state our commitment to excellent FM services. Facilities are the platform from which every public service is provided. Great public services need great facilities.
That’s why I am so delighted we have been able to create this strategy, which I hope will help FM professionals across Government to build on the fantastic work they do.
