NHS Property Services has appointed ethical and sustainable construction expert Dr Shamir Ghumra as director of responsible business.
Dr Ghumra, who joins the NHSPS’s executive board later this month, was previously head of building performance services at BRE (Building Research Establishment), where he was responsible for a range of business areas at BRE, including energy modelling, BREEAM and the BRE Academy.
He is a leading expert on sustainability challenges in the built environment, and a board member of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment (IEMA). He has an engineering doctorate from Loughborough University, where he is visiting professor of ESG performance and strategy, and is also a fellow of the Institute of Environmental Management and Assessment and a chartered environmentalist.
Shamir is a former board member and co-founder of the Supply Chain Sustainability School and former chair of the construction industry coalition on modern slavery. He plays an active role in standards and is involved with both European and international work.
Shamir said: “I am very excited to be joining NHS Property Services at a time when the organisation is starting to realise its potential as a responsible business. This is a turning point for so many businesses in the construction and facilities management industries, and I hope that by bringing my experience to NHSPS we can deliver a sustainable NHS estate that is future-proofed for generations of patients.”
Martin Steele, CEO for the NHSPS, added: “The executive board are delighted to welcome Shamir to the organisation, and we look forward to working closely with him as we embark on the next step on our journey to demonstrating we are a truly responsible business.”
