History of FM: Inspiring change

BIFM deputy chair Liz Kentish (right) speaks to Lucy Jeynes (left), who was instrumental in setting up the institute's highly influential Women in FM (WIFM) special interest group.

History of FM: Pro-motion

In 1991, more than 90 IBM employees bought out the company's FM division. The resulting business, Procord, went on to blaze a trail in outsourced FM provision before being acquired by Johnson Controls in 1994. In this interview, Leigh Carter talks to David Burnett and Ian Mills, two of the people who made the move from IBM to Procord and who became instrumental in the service contractor's subsequent success.

First principles: History of FM

Before the BIFM there was the AFM the Association of Facilities Managers. That organisation's last chairman, Geoff Gidley, played a key role in the merger of the AFM with the Institute of Facilities Management (IFM) to form today's BIFM. Here, in the BIFM's 20th year, Gidley talks to his successor and the combined institute's first chairman, Marilyn Standley, about the institute's earliest days.

Pointing the way: History of FM
Joanna Lloyd-Davies interviews architect-turned-artist Terry Trickett about his involvement in the early days of the facilities management profession.

Captain Pickard: History of FM
Martin Pickard is one of the industry's most recognisable figures, and a pioneer in its development. Here, consultant Lucy Jeynes asks him about going boldly where no FM...

Just Williams: History of FM
In the beginning it came down to Bernard Williams' seminal texts to help define the nascent facilities management sector in the 1970s. Here, as part of our History of FM series, he talks to fellow FM consultant Barry Varcoe about his career.

N.b. More videos from the interview are available here.

Peter McLennan interviews Frank Duffy CBE Frank Duffy started down the path to his status as an FM World 'pioneer of FM' back in the 1960s when he first questioned the long-held belief that a building, once designed, had to stay true to its original architect's purpose. The co-founder of office design consultancy DEGW, Duffy has worked with some of the world's biggest organisations, helping define the facilities sector along the way.

Anne Lennox Martin interviews Bev Nutt

Facilities management consultant Anne Lennox Martin, one of the first people to take a Masters degree in FM, talks to Bev Nutt, who led the course at UCL in the early 1990s.

Lionel Prodgers interviews John Crawshaw
