29 October 2009

High praise for the Navy man who sat all three papers of the Part I exams and successfully achieved a hat trick of distinctions.

Chief Petty Officer Paul Warren left the Royal Navy in July but was fortunate enough to start a new job not so far removed from the Senior Service as a navy careers adviser in Liverpool:  I am now helping to recruit the next generation of sailors and marines.

After 23 years as an HR specialist within the Royal Navy, Warren's final two years in service set a different course, working alongside civilians in the commercial dockyard at Rosyth near Edinburgh as a facilities manager. He was responsible for the provision of office suites, domestic infrastructure, and associated bulk and low level storage, supporting 300 personnel displaced from ships, and managing equipment storage facilities.

For my final year of service I wanted to gain a civilian qualification which recognised the skills gained during my time in the navy. And that's why I chose the BIFM course at the armed forces Resettlement Training Centre in Aldershot. Naturally, he was delighted when hearing that not only had he had passed the exams but to have achieved three distinctions.

For Warren the navy was a job that he loved: Travelling the world Ð while being paid for it.  I have had such a good time it would be difficult to pick out any highlights although tours to the Gulf, the Far East, West Indies and Baltic states would have to be up there along with a ship's visit to Malta in 1990 where I met my wife

Despite his new job being unrelated to facilities management he still believes the BIFM (Qual) course was worthwhile: I am glad I studied for the qualification. I'll look again at an FM related role in the future

Selected from the students who are currently taking BIFM (Qual) this award is managed by BIFM Standards and Education team through the Professional Services and Development department.
