Mitie's security business has been awarded a two-year contract with Highways England to provide up to 50,000 road workers across England with a health & safety passport.
Highways England will benefit from 'Mitie Validate' - a system for managing mobile work forces.
The system operates using personalised smart cards which act as electronic ID for workers to gain access to construction sites, speeding up the clocking in and out process.
The cards also store vital information about the holder's qualifications and competencies, ensuring that correctly qualified people carry out specialist jobs. Mitie Validate also stores the number of hours worked to make sure fitness-to-work guidelines are clearly adhered to.
Mitie Validate can operate on multiple platforms including smartphones, making it easier to manage both contractors and subcontractors across sites.
Simon Jones, operations regional director at Highways England, said: "Safety is our first imperative, so we are pleased to work with Mitie to provide a health and safety passport that will enable us to develop training and create a common standard. So far we have collaborated with over 20 different suppliers who work across our Strategic Road Network."
