Stan Mitchell, chairman of the ISO TC267 Facilities Management committee has spoken of facilities management entering an era of 'standardisation and digitisation'.
Speaking at the European Facility Management Conference conference in Sofia, Bulgaria, Mitchell, who is both CEO of Key Facilities Management International and chairman of the ISO TC 267 Facilities Management committee, said: "We're entering a significant time period in the evolution of facilities management."
He added: "You can see that in the short term the Internet of things (IoT) is going to impact everything we do."
He also described the new management systems standard ISO 41001:2018 as "the biggest thing to happen to FM in over the last 30 years".
Having outlined the development of the ISO suite of FM standards from 2011 to the present day, Mitchell explained how the new ISO4001:2018, allows accredited teams "to demonstrate that they are true FM organisations, showing that how they manage themselves and their clients is appropriate."
Mitchell said: "I believe the future of FM is where we bring real, tangible value to the organisations we serve, not just in cost but in terms of productivity and wellbeing, for the people we are responsible for.
"This is genuinely a new era; a time in the evolution of facilities management where we have a step change opportunity."
EFMC continues today and tomorrow.
