The growing use and management of building information models (BIM) has the potential to boost or even redefine how facilities management is perceived as a career of choice.
A BIFM leaders' forum on the subject took place this week, with participants discussing the current state of the FM profession's involvement with, and influence on, the maintenance and management of BIMs.
Critical issues include a lack of skills in the FM community and a difficulty in demonstrating the value that BIM, and the soft landings approach to post-occupancy evaluation, can deliver. There was also a sense that ensuring the ongoing use of BIMs will improve as younger FMs become involved in their maintenance.
BIFM will produce a paper based on the event in due course, while a feature in next month's FM World will include commentary from the event.
