Property and facilities management services Aura North East will deliver building consultancy to Newcastle's Newcastle Helix, a £350 million urban development scheme.
The consultant was chosen because of its experience and expertise in managing and designing complex infrastructure projects such as hospitals and laboratories.
Aura also has a key role in a new lab facility - The Biosphere - soon to open within the heart of Newcastle Helix.
This will provide a home for ambitious companies within life sciences and innovation, research and development. It forms part of the city's wider commitment to support economic development and growth within the life sciences sector.
The 90,000 square-foot, purpose-built £25 million hub will contain both commercial laboratory and office spaces. As well as satisfying commercial laboratory demand, it will contain a conference facility for up to 80 people, offering space for an events programme and for the sector to meet and share knowledge.
The building is due for completion in late November.
This bespoke commercial offering to life science businesses underpins Newcastle's commitment to providing the right infrastructure to allow local businesses to grow as well as attracting inward investment to the city.
Newcastle City Council is working with a team of experts to deliver the project.
Kier was chosen to build the new facility, designed by Ryder Architects under the commercial and technical guidance of Cam-Sci, ensuring that flexibility and resilience run throughout the building's design.
London-based creative agency Bandstand and Invest Newcastle will both play roles in raising the facility's profile to attract new life sciences businesses to The Biosphere.
