Some of Ireland’s most promising and talented facilities management professionals were celebrated at the BIFM Ireland Region Awards at the organisation’s 2017 FM Summit at Belfast’s National Football Stadium at Windsor Park.

This year’s awards, sponsored by Facilities People International (FPI), recognised John O’Shea from OCS as the BIFM Ireland Region FM Professional of the Year, and Daniel Mahony from Arup as the BIFM Ireland Region Young FM Professional of the Year.

The winners were selected by an independent panel of industry experts including: Avril Behan, assistant head at the School of Multidisciplinary Technologies at the College of Engineering and Built Environment of the Dublin Institute of Technology (DIT); Linda Hausmanis, BIFM CEO; and David Gormalley, senior facilities manager at the Guinness Storehouse and last year’s winner of the BIFM Ireland Region FM Professional of the Year Award.

The awards shortlist featured a range of FM professionals from both the private and public sectors who have demonstrated professional excellence and a passion for the industry.

The judges rewarded O’Shea for his “excellent leadership at OCS, which is greatly complemented by his commitment to always going above and beyond his required duties”.

Arup’s O’Mahony received his award for “continually striving to exceed client expectations whilst furthering his own professional development, knowledge and experiences”.

Janet Downer, director of Facilities People International; said: “It has been an absolute pleasure to lend our support to the 2017 BIFM Ireland Region Awards. The FM industry is one that is driven by its people, which makes the awards today all the more significant. The talent we have witnessed with this year’s finalists is a testament to the fantastic pool of FM professionals we have across Ireland.”

Pat Gaughan, chair, BIFM Ireland Region, said: “The awards not only highlight the outstanding work of the more established FM professionals in the field, but also those who are just beginning their FM careers. We offer our thanks to Facilities People International for their wonderful support this year, and I’m sure Janet will agree, we were blown away by the calibre of this year’s entries.

The summit, sponsored by Aramark, Compass, H&J, and Sodexo, also brought together both business and FM professionals to discuss industry trends and to share their knowledge and ideas. This year’s theme was ‘FM & The Internet of Things’, which aimed to uncover how “the Internet of Things (IOT) is helping (or hindering) the FM industry”.

Speakers included; Derrick Black, Genisys; Karl Horner, Mobiess; Andrew Wilkinson, Sodexo; Janet Stevenson, IT Guarded; Jane Cooper, Skanska; and Ewoud Harnie, PC Sint Amandus.
