Mears is installing photovoltaic panels on more than 3,500 houses in a £20m deal with Cross Keys Homes in Peterborough.
The contract, which Mears believes is the largest social housing photovoltaic scheme in the UK, was won with partner British Gas.
Installation, which will start in September and last until April, is being funded by British Gas as a part of a Feeding in Tariff (FIT) scheme over 25 years.
Mears will carry out a significant number of the installations, as well as all associated works such as scaffolding and electrical components.
David Miles, chief executive of Mears Group, said there are increasing opportunities in the photovoltaic area well into 2012, particularly as the government’s Green Deal to help home owners upgrade energy equipment and install other energy efficiency measures kicks in.
“Cross Keys will provide us an important reference site to lead our drive into this emerging energy opportunity as we continue to successfully leverage our partnership with British Gas, which gives us access to both funding and expertise in this area," he said.
