Patients in Edinburgh will soon be able to make unlimited cheap phone calls from their bedside, according to an article in the Scotsman newspaper.
The move comes after NHS bosses bowed to pressure to remove sky-high charges, the article said.
Hospedia, which runs the beside phone and TVs at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary, will charge just over £1 a day, compared to the current daily £5 charge.
However, the lowest rates will require patients to sign up for 12 days.
Hospedia also noted that the new package would allow unlimited time on the phone, access to television and the Internet. It was decided to roll out the scheme after a successful trial of patients in PFI hospitals across the country.
Hospedia chief executive Tim Weil said interactive healthcare information may also be considered, as well as on-demand TV and audio books.
