The Ministry of Defence is setting up a national prime contract worth between £440m and £950m to manage the armed forces' 240,000-hectare training estate.
The present contract ends in 2013, according to a statement by the Defence Infrastructure Organisation (DIO).
The new contract will last between five and 10 years and will cover training areas, camps and ranges at sites including Salisbury Plain, Catterick, Sennybridge and Otterburn.
The National Training Estate Prime Contract (NTEP) will be for general facilities management, accommodation services, management of the rural estate, catering, cleaning, construction, range bookings and information management.
"Military training is vital to the ongoing success of operations in Afghanistan and Libya, so DIO's top priority is to support the armed forces, including the provision of excellent training facilities," said Brigadier Ian Simpson, head of training.
"The training estate contains a variety of terrain, buildings and training facilities across the UK. By creating a national contract, we will ensure coherent management and optimised value for money across highly complex assets and training requirements."
Around 9,000 people use the facilities every day
Simpson said the DIO is looking at all possible suppliers, from small- to medium-sized businesses to prime contractors, “to ensure that we deliver the best possible outcome for the military frontline".
The contract tender notice for the NTEP will be issued to the Official Journal of the European Union (OJEU) and the Defence Contracts Bulletin. Closing date for expressions of interest is 2 September.
A list of organisations that submit expressions of interest in the contract will, with their permission, be made available via the online Next Generation Estate Contracts Potential Bidders Directory on the Ministry of Defence website.
