BIFM Awards 2016 - Leader of the Year
Skanska's Katy Dowding has been crowned BIFM Leader of the Year at the BIFM Awards 2016.
Starting out as a quantity surveyor, Dowding spent 15 years with Tarmac/Carillion before moving to Skanska, where she has worked for the past 13 years. She was appointed managing director in 2012, her current role, where she has used her experience to oversee and manage 800 employees and a turnover of more than £100 million.
Judges praised Dowding for her 'exceptional all-round experience', and for her 'true passion for the industry, which is exciting and contagious'.
Dowding has played key roles in a number of high-profile projects, including a £352 million refurbishment of the Ministry of Defence headquarters in Whitehall, London, a commissioning and handover project at Barts and the Royal London Hospitals, and she was part of an integrated sustainability team at Derby Hospital, which has achieved more than £2 million in savings to date.
She has also promoted training and development within Skanska and the FM sector. Dowding authorised more than £300,000 in training costs in 2015 at Skanska, and has driven apprenticeship and mentoring schemes.
Dowding is a keen advocate of promoting women in the industry. She is a regular participant in BIFM Women in FM (WIFM) events, and she heads up Skanska's Facilities Services Leadership team, which now has a representation of more than 50 per cent women.
Dowding also set up Skanska's diversity and inclusion working group - the first of its kind within Skanska, and continues to support diversity and inclusion in the FM industry.
She has continued to promote women in the construction and FM industries, having served as chair of the Association of Women in Construction and won the 2013 Women in the City Woman of Achievement Award.
