The Carbon Trust and the British Computer Society are to develop a new software tool that will help companies monitor data centre energy use.
The new project focuses on data centres as they contribute the largest levels of energy use in the IT sector, which is said to produce carbon emissions similar to the aviation industry.
The new software tool allows data centre managers to monitor the total cost of ownership, energy efficiency and carbon emissions.
The Carbon Trust said that the software would allow operators to simulate a data centre environment factoring both the mechanical and electrical infrastructure as well as IT equipment.
